fortunately for me

YEESSSS! I got a perfect score for pre-final exams in Discrete Math. And it was also the first time I had finished an exam in that class before time was up.

A couple of nights before we got the results, I had a bad dream. I dreamt that I only got one item correctly. So when reality proved otherwise, I was actually more relieved than overjoyed about it. I muttered a brief prayer of thanks.

For few friends however, the day hadn’t been as good. One lost her wallet which contains an ATM card, a ring, and cash amounting 15,000 pesos. Worse, her camera phone was also missing; all these she was quite sure were in her bag. With her awful dismay she wished she rather lost the whole bag than find its zipper broken which only confirmed that the items were stolen – in the computer laboratory. I’ve learned that later on, the wallet was found in the ladies’ room, empty.

For two other classmates, misfortune was when their capstone project was deemed not feasible for implementation after the academic website (suddenly) integrated a feature that’s similar to the system they’re proposing. As a result, they have to come up with another project which would not have been as disheartening if they aren’t aiming to graduate next month. My, I feel sad for them. Why wouldn’t the panel consider the fact that these students has been working hard on their proposal for the whole semester already while the subject functionality was “coincidentally” integrated to the school’s website just a few days ago? Is it to be charged against them if they weren’t informed that the school has been working on a similar system already? Could we regard it as mere coincidence that the school’s developer uploaded a similar system few days before our classmates were scheduled to defend their project when from the very beginning, the developer served as their contact person on the ways and means of the system? We wish our assumptions are wrong…

infamous

Disclaimer: This post contains adult theme. If you find such offensive, do not read any further.

School was dragging. We were left alone to work on an exercise but the computer I was using won’t cooperate. My frustration’s worsening. I muttered, “This is so boring, I’d rather have sex”. Some classmates overheard and no sooner it was literally the talk of the class.

These (some) other versions were later concocted by my fans err… classmates:

“It’s so difficult, I’d rather have s**”

“Read about our report ok?” “Ugh! I’d rather have s**”

“We might be late. We better have s**”

Night Full of 'Prom'ising Memories

Last year you had a preview of my sister’s preparations for her prom. This year though, it’s not just a ‘backstage pass’ for you but a better coverage of the inside story.

Now a senior, my sister had outgrown her fancy for Disney princesses’-like ball gowns and opted for a chic look. We agreed on white but the dress itself was mom’s pick and we only saw it when it was brought home. Working on a small budget, I found the shoes in a thrift shop in the city; just slightly used and best of all fits her size. Thanks to such shops and our resourcefulness, no more than $20-equivalent paid for everything she wore for the prom.

Through the photos, I can tell she enjoyed her last prom – very much. And when our Cinderella came home past midnight, her stories couldn’t wait for the next day that she woke me up from my still light sleep and beamed that about 15 guys asked her for a dance and that many others flattered her to be Rihanna’s look-a-like. Well, I wouldn’t want to ruin the night and I was too exhausted to protest.

A Pre-Valentine's Day Accomplishment

Done reading S. Meyer’s ‘New Moon’ .That checks one of the goals I set to accomplish this year. Great! I’ve successfully raced against the release of its movie by November.

But then only recently I realized that as far as the objective is concerned, it’s been long accomplished with the ‘The Da Vinci Code’. And just a few weeks ago the poster of ‘Inkheart’ at the theater reminded me that I had read it a couple of years ago. Anyway at least I’ve proven that I could adhere to my goals.

Here’s an excerpt from the book suited for Valentine’s Day…

“Before you, my life was like a moonless night. Very dark, but there were stars – points of light and reason. And then you shot across my sky like a meteor. There was brilliancy, there was beauty. When you were gone, everything went black. Nothing had changed but my eyes were blinded by the light. I couldn’t see the stars anymore” – Edward Cullen

a recollection

I was again caught in a whirlwind of things-to-do: two class reports were delivered this week; five consecutive classes gave quizzes the other day; editorial work for the school paper; a heap of homework to accomplish over the weekend; pre-final exams commence on Monday… they just seem endless!

Occasionally, times like this would make me wish that I could be a kid again; a carefree preschooler who spends his day playing, eating, watching TV, and lying in bed although not necessarily sleeping. The ‘good old days’ we say. Back when the only schedules I observe were air times of my favorite TV shows and the books I had to read are short and colorful ones. Those days when I could prove my wit by being able to answer “what is your name?” in a complete sentence, count to 20 and sing the first stanza of our national anthem. How truly grateful I’ll be should my parents insist now that I take my afternoon nap everyday and I’m very much willing to be punished if I don’t.

Speaking of childhood, I found this picture of my peers taken in our residence back then…

As you can see, it is evident that I’m the tallest among us. Well, I still am; Champ a little less while Jogu is not so blessed with height.

This is what we look now… (Since Champ moved out from the neighborhood and us a couple of years later, our trio has never been together)

Jogu is my cousin. He’s the eldest among us and a smart kid; a consistent honor student and the first to learn the word ‘philosophy’ at the age of 5 to 7 although I doubt if he knew the meaning in his tender years. And if I remembered it right, he’s the first to learn how to use shampoo. Today, Jogu makes a living as a freelance web developer.

Champ was the rich kid. The first to have a colored TV and a console game called ‘family computer’. I remember that he always used to argue that I am older than Jogu because of my height. Champ had completed his Bachelor in Nursing but had never practiced his profession. He’d worked in a fast food store, a contact center and the last I’ve known was in a hotel.

Me? Uh… I used to be their fan –amazed by Jogu’s bright ideas and envious of Champ’s toys (Damn! Looser!). Honestly I can’t remember any significant role; maybe I’m just the silent follower. Well, I’ve told more than enough about my job and studies in this blog so there’s nothing left to say about that either. Maybe it’s safe to claim that I’m the most sociable who mingle with belong to the famous. Taming the ego, let’s just say I’m the only one diligent enough to blog – period.

Get me going

February came with a heap of things to do until the third week it seems.

Since the seminar we attended last week, stuff started to pour in. Now the problem is my tendency to fall into a trance when I realize things pile up. Much as I wish I could be the Energizer bunny at times like this, there simply are days (plural emphasized) when I just can’t get going.

Like last Saturday, I woke on my regular time which is good 2 hours early for my weekend class. But then I remained curled on bed until I lazily reached for the book I was reading before I slept; Twilight that was. At least the vampire and the clumsy girl succeeded in shaking my thoughts into a consciousness that’s better than drowsily scanning my room.

I glanced on the clock; it’s 15 minutes past the official schedule. It has been an unspoken covenant between us and the instructor that the class would never start on time which manifests that somehow all of us have the same Saturday morning struggle. I made my first major decision for the day. I texted a trusty classmate to give him the lamer version of ’I am sick’ excuse (could be sick of attending class that early) which he promised to relay. Fast forward to few days later, I learned that our teacher was absent as well. That was my lucky day! Edward Cullen was right – it’s healthy to ditch class sometimes. I’m grinning at the thought.

I’m done with the book and now reading its sequel since a couple of days ago. Hmm I hope I won’t forget to claim my prize from Aby this afternoon. We had bets over lunch yesterday as to whether or not Edward ate food. I’ve marked page 207 last night to settle that.

Back to reality now, we’re aiming to make a special Valentine issue of the school paper so I ought to be proofreading the contributions received so far or drafting my own article. Unfortunately, I can’t decide which to do first. But one thing doesn’t leave me a choice: all must be done by tomorrow so the ones in charge of layout could work over the weekend.

I hope blogging helps me get started.
